When you are twenty years old, you very often don’t have a clue how to talk to women. Not that talking is really what you want to do at that age, but unfortunately this is an art that you have to learn. The fact that most women mature earlier than guys of the same age doesn’t make it any easier for the guys.

Having said that: most of us who are fifty years or older are still struggling with the intricate set of codes that a woman calls ‘talking’. Guys who have been married for thirty years will know what I am talking about: you say something completely innocent and your wife bursts into tears while you don’t have a clue what you did wrong. Despite that, there are a few things men should always keep in mind.

A very important thing to remember is that she wants to be treated with respect. She would love you to tell her that she has beautiful legs and that her new mini is an excellent way to showcase them. She would not like it at all if you told her that if her dress were any shorter it would have been a scarf ‘ even if that were the truth.

Another useful fact to remember is that ladies like the conversation to be about themselves. Not that they are egocentric. Women can indeed be very selfless. But if you are introduced to a lovely lady do not spend the first half an hour explaining to her how good you are at your job. Rather ask her about herself and the things she likes (or dislikes).

Women also generally like men who are courteous. Don’t overdo it, but opening a door for her or offering to carry her shopping bags or heavy briefcase will earn you loyalty points. Don’t be patronizing though ‘ it’s a delicate balancing act which you will learn over time.

A very important aspect of male-female conversation that you have to learn fast is not only how to talk to women, but what you are allowed to say about other women. It’s perfectly fine to tell your female partner that you think the neighbor’s wife is obese and ugly. It’s NOT fine to say that about your mother in law. And remarking that the beauty queen across the street has lovely legs will without doubt earn you a period in the dog box.
