How to Find a Divorce Lawyer
There are many things to think about when you’re looking for a lawyer to deal with your divorce. Obviously, you’ll want things to be dealt with smoothly and efficiently, but you also want to make sure you aren’t bamboozled by legal jargon, so that you fully understand exactly what’s going on.
A lot of people assume all lawyers will be the same and give the same service. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In our experience, there are just as many differences in levels of competence between lawyers as any other profession.
That’s why choosing a divorce solicitor to handle your case is something you should do with care, to ensure you get the right person for you. This is much better than simply someone who knows the law and is only really in it for the money, not actually offering you the best advice.
So how do you go about finding the right lawyer for your needs? Well, there are a few things to bear in mind, but one place we always suggest you start looking is through your own contacts. ie anyone you know that has already been through a divorce, you can ask them (should you feel able to) if they would recommend the lawyers they used.
Word of mouth recommendations are always valuable. However, you should also realise that not everybody’s situation is the same. Just because it was right for your friend, it may not be right for you.
For instance, your friend may have been after a quickie divorce, with little contact between either side and a simple “rubber stamping” of the end of the marriage. This could be because there were no children involved, or very few assets to discuss in the divorce settlement.
You, though, may really want a firm of family law solicitors, who know the complications of having children involved in the situation, and can lead you in the right direction with minimal fuss and maximum effectiveness for your requirements. It’s vital that you decide this beforehand, without simply going along with a recommendation.
Obviously, divorce is going to be a difficult time for you, however much it seems the right way forward. So it’s well worth taking some time to find a solicitor that will fit with your needs and help you through things, rather than finding someone who adds further troubles to the situation.
